Spring 2010
After attending CSPP in LA from 1988-1992 and graduating with a PsyD, Tanya Aly moved back to her hometown of San Francisco and secured a part time post doc at UCSF's employee assistance program (EAP). Tanya worked with the faculty and staff of UCSF providing short term therapy, and also worked at the adolescent facility at Walden House, to pay the bills. It took me some time to adjust to life after graduate school. No 247 papers to write, tests to score, dissertations to write.
While at Walden House, Tanya was tapped by a colleague to start a residential treatment facility for substance abusing woman and their children. She began working with dedicated people from all sorts of professional backgrounds (childcare workers, therapists, nurses, probation officers, psychiatrists) and as mentored by an expert in the field of substance abuse, Joan Zweben, who exposed Tanya to a different world. Later, Tanya became the clinical supervisor and then the director of this residential treatment facility, having an amazing time.
Subsequently, Tanya went on to work at UCSF at a program called Citywide Case Management, which served the chronically mentally ill population of San Francisco. It was a higher level of care than outpatient services. As a licensed psychologist, Tanya worked on the management team, supervised both staff and pre and post doctoral interns, managed the clinical aspects of the program, wrote grants and provided direct services. “It was dawning on me that I liked to do various things and work with other disciplines.”
Westside Community Services was her next stop after having kids and wanting to return to work. Tanya earned the position of clinical supervisor in the outpatient and ACT programs, working with a multi disciplinary team and making long lasting friends and colleagues. In addition, Tanya also began seeing clients in private practice at a small holistic medical group in Sausalito.
Today, Tanya is building a private practice in San Francisco, working part time at Stanford University in the counseling and psychological services program, and supervising practicum students at Westside Community services. “My life feels full and varied. Just the way I like it.”
