Going Green: E-reserve

By Kara Stocker, Summer 2009

With Alliant being a “green” campus, students may wonder why so many professors still choose to use paper to make copies of articles and other class materials. Putting articles on electronic reserve (e-reserve) is a quite simple task that Jessi Havel is in charge of in the library. Jessi simply needs the author name and a title, and she is able to upload articles onto e-reserve.

However, after talking to professors and students about why they do not engage in this process, it seems that many professors consider themselves technologically challenged and shy away from this intimidating process.

However, due to copyright laws, if a professor is trying to upload book chapters, they may be limited to how many pages they can put on e-reserve.

So what can we do as students to try to encourage professors to use this handy electronic resource?

We can volunteer to do the dirty work for them by getting a list of materials needed and then providing Jessi with the information (or encourage our TA’s do to the same.)

If we must pay to print to cut down on wasted paper, why not work toward making our campus little bit greener by reading our articles online?
