In the Know: Helpful Hints

By Michelle Jurkiewicz Summer 2011

Here are some helpful tips from one student to another:

  • The school does care about your success. They can only know that there is a problem if you tell them.
  • Francisco's Café (free wi-fi) on the corner of Powell and Francisco is a great spot for food and studying away from Pier 39.
  • Psychologytoday.com is a fantastic way to find a therapist.
  • Check your Alliant e-mail even if it sometimes feels like wading through irrelevant e-mails. It is good to get used to checking a work e-mail.
  • Ask senior students for advice about their favorite professors and which classes they recommend.
  • One of the best ways to understand a test in assessment is to have someone administer it to you.
  • Secure several volunteers early who are interested in being assessment participants so that you are not left scrambling to find a participant at the last minute.
  • Visit professors during office hours and reach out to those who with you share interests. It is important to build connections for success in your graduate and professional career.
  • If you aren't taking summer classes, spend the summer reading relevant research on your interests or dissertation topic.
  • Get as much experience as you can in areas of interest—TA, participate in research projects of faculty members, and join associations. You are only going to get busier as you advance through school and licensure.
