Remember those tasty Piroshkis served during multicultural week? Those delectable treats were purchased from Moscow and Tbilisi Bakery and Deli located in the Outer Richmond area. There are actually two sides to this venture. One side manufactures the pastries, which range from turnovers to cakes to the Piroshkis. Although the Piroshkis were made in a non-traditional manner (original Piroshkis are much smaller and usually in a half-moon shape), the meat or potato fillings satisfy both meat lovers and vegetarians. They also offer a wide variety of homemade breads to suit any taste. Bakery products are reasonably priced and worth every penny.
The other side is a deli where everything from Borscht to cabbage salad is made. The variety of deli items ranges from stuffed cabbage to a beet and walnut ball, which tastes fantastic. Maya, the woman who owns the deli, was wonderful, had all ordered items ready to go on time, and made sure that I was happy with the purchase. She also caters lunch and dinner and charges a modest fee. While the bakery side does not accept debit cards, the deli portion accepts both debit and credit cards.
So, if you are looking for an authentic Russian meal at a reasonable price in San Francisco, travel to 5540 Geary Blvd. (between 19th and 20th Ave).
